'33' was able to host a number of small-scale touring theatre groups in the 40-seat theatre upstairs. Some companies such as The People Show had a long relationship with '33' and devised site-specific shows to great effect. Like other companies, they would provide workshops in local schools as part of a residency.
Many successful drama groups were run at '33', for performance on stage and video. Sean Gallagher, from Luton, attended a group for the unemployed and went on to have success on stage and television, such as Coronation Street. Another, Steven Featherstone, went on to work with Aardman Animation and to lecture in film at UCA Farnham. A youth drama group member in the mid 80s, Danny Cannon, went on to a successful Hollywood career in film and television.
Staff and friends at '33' also created an in-house performance groups, such as The Fabulous Random Band, creating hugely inventive and popular shows. Over 100 local people were involved in the making of a full-length film at '33', shot on video over five years. "That Nice Mr. Orton" was shown at '33' and in a local film festival.
